Jack loses his ring: idea
Story idea
Following an argument with Hellen (or perhaps when she leaves), Jack gets mad and stomps around one of the corner classrooms alone, blustering and kicking things around. Finally he gets so upset he punches a hole in the sheetrock with his ring-bearing hand and while he struggles to get his hand out (scraping it up in the process) he accidentally loses his wedding ring behind the wall. He starts trying to smash up the wall to find out where the ring went, ignoring his bleeding arm and the fact he might’ve broken a knuckle, until Lee (following the panicking noise he’s making) stumbles on to him. She calmly takes a tool from her tool belt and chips away at the wall delicately until they get to where the ring fell…without dismantling the whole wall like Jack planned to do.
She tells him “you COULD have gotten me or someone else to help, you know.”
And Jack kind of stares at her, stunned, with the ring gripped tightly between his fingers. He doesn’t have any excuse for his reaction or why he wouldn’t walk away and come back later with a plan. It’s normally something he’s good at: coming up with plans. But this ring was important to him and Jenny; plans went out the window.
And so Lee leads him to the infirmary to take care of that bloody hand.
Might rearrange things so she takes him to the infirmary first and THEN helps him retrieve the ring. I might also draw this out since it’s a good visual story. Add it to my “to-do” pile.
I like messing with Jack. He’s normally composed and pretty good about desperate situations (especially life or death or gray moral choices), but he just kind of fails where it comes to these kinds of things.
